I really liked that Forest Gump movie line. “Stupid Is as Stupid Does”. Contemplate the application of this emphatic comment.
Here in the United States, we vote into Legislative office, people to oversee State Government. Helping keep the balance between laws and services that benefit the general public at-large. The legislators are your neighbors that arrive at State Capitols, to read, write and revoke laws. Just like their national counter parts, Legislators are susceptible to the “glitz, glitter and flim-flam of Lobbyist. Lobbyists are paid by a benefactor, to get Legislators to make laws favorable to the benefactor. An example that is so at the forefront of this today, is fireworks. After years of injuries and fires, most states made certain fireworks illegal. There are approximately eight states that don’t have fireworks restrictions. Decades later, lobbyists have pushed through most state legislatures, the law allowing the sale of every type of firework as long as you “PROMISE” not to ignite them in the state of purchase.
The laws allow fireworks retailers to set up stores to sell all kinds of rockets and firecrackers upon the promise you won’t use them. Hum, wonder if we could get drunk drivers to promise when they buy alcohol that they won’t drink it? Makes about the same sense. Anyway, how do you enforce the “non-use” of legally purchased fireworks? The police and fire departments have given up. Some municipalities set up designated fireworks area’s where you can discharge your purchases. WHAT FUN IS THAT??? It’s more enjoyable to do it in your backyard, out-doing your neighbor’s firework’s display!!
We’re experiencing drought in the middle-midwest, Indiana, and the local municipalities have determined that the discharge of fireworks falls within the “Open-Burning Ban”. So, the discharge of fireworks, which could potentially begin a fire, will be illegal. Wait MOST of the fireworks sold are already illegal to ignite. The Fireworks lobby is upset. It seems in the last Indiana Legislature, the Lobbyists “recommended” and legislators found agreeable, language for the Indiana Code that would prevent municipalities from creating local ordinances that prohibited the discharge of fireworks.
Back to the opening—“STUPID IS AS STUPID DOES”.
Think about it.
First we pass a law that says, “YOU CAN LEGALLY SELL A PRODUCT THAT’S ILLEGAL TO USE.
Then we pass a law that says, THE PRODUCT THAT’S ILLEGAL TO USE CAN’T BE DENIED ITS USE, BY REASON OF LOCAL SAFETY ISSUES.
Stupid Is as Stupid Does. That’s the State Legislature
